Star Wars Confirms Jacen Syndulla’s Force Sensitivity
Ahsoka’s latest episode not only continues the expansion of the Star Wars universe but also validates long-standing fan suspicions regarding the Force sensitivity of Jacen Syndulla, the son of Hera Syndulla (portrayed by Mary Elizabeth Winstead in live-action) and the late Jedi Knight Kanan Jarrus, known for his survival of Order 66 and for training Ezra Bridger.
In Star Wars Rebels’ epilogue, fans were introduced to Jacen Syndulla, who was depicted as a child born into a galaxy filled with the Force. While this character made a brief appearance, Ahsoka has now brought Jacen into the live-action realm, played by young actor Evan Whitten. This transition is significant not only because it marks the character’s journey into a different medium but also because it teases an essential aspect of Jacen’s character – his burgeoning Force sensitivity.
This episode’s confirmation of Jacen’s Force abilities occurs during the search for Ahsoka and Sabine. Jacen informs Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Hera that he hears the distinct clash of lightsabers over the ocean. What makes this revelation intriguing is that this battle is concurrent with Ahsoka’s duel against Anakin Skywalker within the enigmatic World Between Worlds. It echoes iconic Force-related moments in Star Wars lore, such as when Leia Organa hears Luke Skywalker through the Force on Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back.
Moreover, the confirmation of Jacen’s sensitivity to the Force is reinforced by Huyang, who acknowledges his father’s Jedi heritage. Fans had previously suspected Jacen’s Force potential based on subtle hints in earlier episodes, such as his expressed desire to become a Jedi and his use of the famous line, “I have a bad feeling.” While the latter phrase is a recurring motif in the Star Wars franchise, Jacen’s delivery suggested an inherent connection to foreseeing events, adding depth to his character.
However, it’s worth noting that Star Wars Rebels might have been the first to tease young Syndulla’s Force sensitivity. In the series’ epilogue, Sabine, Ahsoka’s former Padawan, describes Jacen as “Born to fly, just like his mother. And, well, we all know what his father was like.” This subtle nod hinted at Jacen’s potential Jedi lineage.
The question that arises from these hints and revelations is whether Jacen Syndulla is poised to become one of the next Jedi in the Star Wars saga. This, however, presents an intriguing challenge due to the timeline. Ahsoka takes place before the sequel trilogy, during which the characters of Ahsoka, Hera Syndulla, and Jacen have little to no presence. This is also before the events of Kylo Ren’s destruction of Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Temple, marking the era of the “The Last Jedi.”
While Jacen’s future as a Jedi remains uncertain, it’s worth revisiting comments from Dave Filoni, the showrunner of both Star Wars Rebels and Ahsoka. In 2018, he mentioned that naming the character “Jacen” was a subtle tribute to the expanded universe character of Jacen Solo, a prominent figure who eventually succumbs to the Dark Side. Whether elements of Jacen Solo’s history will manifest in Jacen Syndulla’s character remains unknown. Yet, considering the depth and complexity that Ahsoka and its predecessor, Star Wars Rebels, have brought to the Star Wars universe, it’s likely that Jacen’s future with the Force will be woven into this groundbreaking narrative.
Furthermore, if anyone were to train Jacen in the ways of the Force, it would be Ezra Bridger, as he was trained by Jacen’s father, Kanan Jarrus. This connection adds another layer of potential storytelling to Jacen’s journey.
With Ahsoka continuing to explore uncharted territory within the Star Wars universe, fans eagerly await answers to these intriguing questions. New episodes of Ahsoka premiere on Disney+ every Tuesday, offering a glimpse into the evolving narrative of this beloved franchise.
