After collaborating with Henry Cavill on a recent film, Matthew Vaughn expresses interest in creating a new Superman movie with Cavill, but this time outside the DC Universe. Cavill, who portrayed Superman in the DCEU starting with Man of Steel in 2013, saw his tenure end with the introduction of a new DC Universe, including James Gunn’s upcoming Superman: Legacy movie.
As Gunn’s DC Universe progresses, there may be alternative avenues for Cavill to reprise his role as Superman. During the promotion of their shared film Argylle, Vaughn was asked about the possibility of a Superman: Red Son movie during BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast. Vaughn not only found the Elseworlds story intriguing but expressed a desire to cast Cavill as Superman in this unique take:
“I thought Red Son was one of the cleverest comics I’d ever read, and the current world we’re living in, it’s certainly become a lot more relevant because ignorance causes more issues, and I think the more we learn about Russia and the Russian history…Wow, could you imagine remaking Red Son with Henry Cavill? That would be an interesting movie…”
While there are no immediate plans for Cavill to don the Superman suit again, an Elseworlds movie presents an ideal opportunity for him to revisit the character. A Superman: Red Son adaptation would explore a significant Elseworlds narrative without conflicting with Gunn’s vision for David Corenswet’s Superman in the main DC Universe. Once the DC Universe is fully established, considerations for Cavill’s return as Superman may be on the table.
The Elseworlds brand also opens the possibility for a long-anticipated showdown between Cavill’s Superman and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, following the setup in the 2022 movie. Such an encounter could serve as a fitting conclusion to Cavill’s Superman era and provide an alternate endpoint to the DCEU movie timeline. A Black Adam vs. Superman film could potentially outperform Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which marked the final chapter in the original DCEU.
In 2020, Superman: Red Son was adapted into an animated DC movie, featuring Jason Isaacs as the voice of Superman. The future remains uncertain regarding Cavill’s return as Superman, be it through an Elseworlds movie or a multiverse crossover with Corenswet’s iteration in the DC Universe. Regardless, Cavill’s legacy as Superman remains significant, contributing to his prominent status in Hollywood. For now, fans can relive Cavill’s era as Superman through his past DC movies.
