Jake Lloyd, known for portraying Anakin Skywalker in 1999’s “Star Wars: Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace,” stepped away from the spotlight shortly after the film’s release. In a recent interview, his mother, Lisa Lloyd, provided an update on his health and addressed longstanding rumors within the Star Wars community.
Lisa revealed that Jake was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2008, experiencing delusions such as seeing people with “black eyes” and having conversations with Jon Stewart. Additionally, he struggled with anosognosia, denying the need for medication or therapy. In 2015, Jake faced legal trouble, leading to a 10-month jail stint due to being off his medications. Tragically, his sister’s death in 2018 worsened his condition.
In March 2023, Jake experienced a severe psychotic episode, prompting his admission to a mental health facility, where he has shown improvement over 10 months. He can now enjoy watching movies again, including recent favorites like “Wonka” and the Disney+ series “Ahsoka.” Lisa emphasized Jake’s love for Star Wars, dispelling the notion that his illness stemmed from backlash against “The Phantom Menace,” attributing it instead to genetic factors.
Contrary to speculation, Jake didn’t leave acting because of Star Wars but due to family issues. Lisa reminisced about his joy in filming Star Wars and his earlier roles in films like “Jingle All the Way” and “Apollo 11.” Jake’s acting career tapered off after “The Phantom Menace,” with his final film credit in 2001’s “Madison.
