Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have resurfaced in the public eye, thanks to their latest venture, the adaptation of Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” from book to television. However, before their collaboration with Netflix, their trajectory seemed destined to intersect with Lucasfilm and the sprawling Star Wars franchise.
Earlier this year, Benioff and Weiss revealed their endeavor to craft a Star Wars film titled “The First Jedi.” In an interview with Variety, Benioff elaborated on the concept, detailing that their proposed narrative would delve into the origins of the Jedi Order, exploring the fundamental questions of its inception, the reasons behind its formation, and the genesis of the first lightsaber. However, despite their enthusiasm and creative vision, Lucasfilm opted not to pursue the project. Benioff acknowledged this decision, recognizing Lucasfilm’s prerogative over their intellectual property.
During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Benioff and Weiss provided additional insights into the development process of “The First Jedi” and its subsequent cancellation by Lucasfilm. Weiss expressed regret over the project’s demise, revealing that they had formulated a basic storyline for the initial film and had outlined potential sequels. He lamented the industry reality where not all conceived projects materialize into fruition, citing it as one of the disappointments in their career.
The conversation shifted toward Lucasfilm’s ongoing pursuit of a similar narrative with a “Dawn of the Jedi” film, helmed by acclaimed director James Mangold. Although Benioff and Weiss maintained diplomatic decorum, acknowledging their respect for Mangold, there was an underlying sentiment of lingering thoughts on the subject. The podcast touched upon Mangold’s approach to the Jedi origins, hinting at a narrative exploring the distant past and the discovery of the Force.
Mangold himself, in a separate interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, discussed his creative vision for the project. He expressed a desire to explore the galaxy’s formative years and the emergence of Force-sensitive individuals before the formal establishment of the Jedi Order. Mangold’s vision suggests a departure from traditional Jedi narratives, focusing on the prelude to Jedi existence and the foundational elements of the Force.
While Benioff and Weiss’ “The First Jedi” project faced a premature end, the evolving narrative landscape within the Star Wars franchise continues to inspire new interpretations and explorations of its lore. As Lucasfilm and its collaborators navigate the vast expanse of the Star Wars universe, the prospect of uncovering untold stories and revisiting ancient epochs promises to captivate audiences with fresh perspectives on beloved mythologies.
