Avatar movie updates Zuko’s look

Fans of the beloved animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” have been eagerly anticipating news of the upcoming animated movies from Avatar Studios, and a recent report has shed some light on what they can expect. According to AvatarNews, Paramount Pictures confirmed the release date of the first film at CinemaCon 2023, and teased some updated designs for the characters.

The image of the film revealed the older Gaang, all in their 20s and 30s, standing in front of a snowy mountain. While not much information can be gleaned from the picture, fans noticed that Zuko will seemingly sport a long ponytail, an update on the traditional Fire Nation style seen throughout the show. This fresh yet familiar hairstyle is a promising sign that the upcoming films will stay true to the beloved characters while introducing new elements to the story.

The new animated feature film is set to release on Oct. 10, 2025, and will mark the first of three animated movies from Avatar Studios. Co-creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are producing alongside Eric Coleman, with Lauren Montgomery directing. Montgomery has previously provided storyboard work on several episodes from Season 3 of “The Last Airbender.”

Award-winning playwright Kenneth Lin is rumored to be writing the screenplay, and fans are eagerly anticipating his take on the story. Dante Basco, who voiced Zuko in the original series, is reportedly returning to voice the prince in the adult Gaang film.

While not much information has been divulged about the plot of the first film, fans are speculating that it will take place sometime between the end of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and the start of “The Legend of Korra,” given the age ranges of the characters. This time period will allow fans to see how the beloved characters have grown and evolved since the end of the original series.

The second animated film is rumored to center around Zuko, the exiled Fire Nation prince who served as the antagonist in the original series before deciding to fight alongside Team Avatar. The film has been rumored for an October 2026 premiere window. The third animated film will reportedly be a sequel to “The Legend of Korra” and focus on the new Earth Avatar.

While “Avatar: The Last Airbender” ended 15 years ago, its popularity has resulted in numerous projects, including comic-book short stories and a widely negatively-received live-action film in 2010. Netflix revealed a live-action series remake in 2018, with DiMartino and Konietzko initially named as the showrunners before the two exited the television series due to creative differences. However, there have been rumors Avatar Studios and the Netflix remake may be working closely together.

The original “Avatar: The Last Airbender” series premiered in 2005 and has garnered universal acclaim for its thematic and emotional storytelling. All three seasons of the show are available for streaming on Paramount+ and Netflix, allowing fans to revisit the beloved world of the show while eagerly awaiting the release of the upcoming animated films.
