Before the DCU reboot, James Gunn’s Superman was a standalone film like The Batman

Before the decision to reboot the DCEU under the leadership of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, there were plans for James Gunn’s Superman film to stand alone, much like Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Initially approached in the summer of 2022, Gunn was envisioned to write and direct a fresh take on the Man of Steel that would exist independently from the established DCEU continuity.

However, the trajectory shifted after the success of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. Gunn’s proven track record led the studio to entrust him, alongside veteran producer Peter Safran, with the task of revitalizing the DCU. This decision birthed “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters,” a curated slate of films and TV series overseen by Gunn.

Superman: Legacy, one of the flagship projects in this new chapter, tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing in Smallville, Kansas. The casting choices reflect a blend of established talent and rising stars: David Corenswet embodies the iconic role of the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan brings to life the indomitable Lois Lane. Other recent casting additions include Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.

Despite the initial intention for Gunn’s Superman to exist outside the DCEU, the project has now been integrated into the larger DCU narrative. This evolution underscores the dynamic nature of the studio’s approach to storytelling and character development.

As fans eagerly anticipate the release of Superman: Legacy and other projects within the DCU, the success and reception of Gunn’s vision will serve as a litmus test for the future direction of the franchise.
