Could the Latest Addition to the Shrek Franchise Challenge Disney’s Animation Dominance?

The newly released film from the Shrek Universe franchise, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (2022), has garnered exceptional reviews, posing a potential threat to Disney’s animation supremacy, particularly Disney Animation Studios. This isn’t DreamWorks’ first attempt at rivaling the animation giant.

For decades, “Disney” has held its position as a frontrunner in animation, stemming from their inaugural full-length animated feature, “Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs” (1937). The name “Disney” has become synonymous with top-tier animation. The company consistently competes for the “Best Animated Movie” category at the Oscars, often emerging victorious against studios like Pixar Animation Studios.

The new Shrek spin-off stars Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots on a quest to find a mythical wishing star and restore his lives. With an impressive 95% on RottenTomatoes.com and a 93% audience score, the film is receiving widespread acclaim. It’s being hailed as a smart, sweet, and funny addition to the franchise that has improved over the years.

Comparatively, Disney’s recent theatrical release, “Strange World” (2022), faced mixed reviews and was deemed by some as a “flop.” While it topped Disney+’s streaming rankings and pushed boundaries in animation, it only scored 72% on Rotten Tomatoes. In contrast, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” appears to have a more universal appeal that’s likely to translate into box office success.

Interestingly, DreamWorks was founded as a competitor to Disney Animation after Jeffrey Katzenberg left Disney due to creative differences. DreamWorks Animation Studios, now under Universal Pictures, was initiated by Spielberg, Katzenberg, and Geffen. With the positive reception of “Puss in Boots,” the tide might be shifting in DreamWorks’ favor, potentially challenging Disney’s animation reign.
