Choujin X revives Tokyo Ghoul’s forgotten power with a mythic twist

Tokyo Ghoul fans who have been yearning for further exploration of the supercompensation phenomenon introduced in Tokyo Ghoul:re will find satisfaction in the pages of Choujin X, the latest manga by mangaka Sui Ishida. With this new series, Ishida delves deeper into an ability that he initially touched upon only briefly in Tokyo Ghoul.

In the Tokyo Ghoul universe, ghouls have always exhibited a remarkable ability to grow stronger after surviving intense battles. While Ishida never explicitly explained the mechanics behind this phenomenon, he hinted at its existence throughout the original series. It wasn’t until Tokyo Ghoul:re, the spin-off sequel, that more concrete details were unveiled. In chapter 37, the Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG) discovered, through an X-ray examination of protagonist Ken Kaneki’s body, that ghouls experience a process known as supercompensation. According to this concept, ghouls become more powerful the more they endure injuries and overcome them. Now, in Choujin X, Ishida brings back this significant ability, albeit with a new twist.

Choujin X introduces a similar phenomenon called “Raise” much earlier in the narrative. As early as chapter 13, choujins, the super-powered beings in this new series, could be heard shouting the name “Raise” during their battles, and it was evident that doing so granted them increased strength. However, it wasn’t until ten chapters later that Ishida provided a clearer explanation. He revealed that when a choujin comes perilously close to death and activates Raise, they not only heal from their injuries but also undergo a transformation, becoming more choujin-like in the process. This transformation results in a significant power boost. As the story progresses, Ishida expands on this concept, cautioning that excessive use of Raise can push choujins into a berserker state.

While both Tokyo Ghoul’s supercompensation and Choujin X’s Raise share similarities in terms of characters growing stronger through adversity, there are notable differences between the two abilities. In Tokyo Ghoul, ghouls’ enhanced abilities stem from the accumulation of specialized cells within their bodies. Each time a ghoul sustains damage, their body forms vein-like tubes that carry these cells, augmenting their physical capabilities. On the other hand, Choujin X’s Raise is described in a more poetic and mystical manner. The narration refers to it as a “pseudo-death” that merges creation and destruction. When delving into the berserker state, Ishida adds further depth, describing it as a religious or euphoric experience for some, while also alluding to the ominous notion of “staring into the abyss.”

This stark contrast in the portrayal of the abilities showcases Ishida’s willingness to explore familiar concepts in divergent ways. While Tokyo Ghoul focused on the scientific aspects of supercompensation, Choujin X delves into the mythic and emotional dimensions of Raise. By employing different approaches, Ishida manages to create a sense of connection between the two series while providing a fresh and captivating experience for readers.

Fans of Tokyo Ghoul need not fear that Choujin X is a complete departure from what they loved about the former series. Instead, it presents an opportunity for them to delve into Ishida’s new manga and discover familiar thematic elements, albeit explored through a distinct lens. As Choujin X unfolds, these connections to Tokyo Ghoul will continue to enthrall readers, bridging the gap between the two worlds and immersing fans in a captivating narrative that simultaneously evokes nostalgia and excitement.
