Consider This: ‘Aquaman’ Tops the List as the Best DCEU Film

A cinematic debut fit for a king of the Seven Seas.

As Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom graces theaters this holiday season, it marks the poignant conclusion of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) era. Over the past decade, the DCEU has ignited fervent debates, with some films earning praise while others faced challenges in critical and commercial spheres. Amid this dynamic, one film stands out—2018’s Aquaman, directed by James Wan and starring Jason Momoa as the iconic hero. Beyond being the only DCEU film to surpass the billion-dollar mark, Aquaman also stands as the pinnacle of the DCEU experience, thanks to a stellar ensemble cast and unique distinguishing factors.

The film’s alignment with its comic book origins played a crucial role in its success. Following Arthur Curry (Momoa), the future King of Atlantis, the narrative draws inspiration from Aquaman comics and real sea life. James Wan, along with screenwriters David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, meticulously crafted an immersive world that mirrors the richness of the comics. The film’s visual spectacle, from a gladiatorial match between Arthur and his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) to the terrifying presence of The Trench, showcases Wan’s prowess in merging fantasy and horror elements seamlessly.

Central to Aquaman’s triumph is Jason Momoa’s multifaceted portrayal of Arthur Curry. Momoa captures the charm, rough edges, and unwavering commitment of Aquaman, staying true to the character’s comic book essence. Unlike the Super Friends cartoon portrayal, which perpetuated the notion that Aquaman was ineffectual outside aquatic missions, Momoa’s Aquaman emerges as a formidable force. His superhuman strength, nearly bulletproof skin, and telepathic connection with sea life are showcased in thrilling sequences, culminating in a battle with the colossal sea monster, the Karathen.

A significant influence on Aquaman’s narrative came from Geoff Johns’ acclaimed run in the Aquaman comics. Johns, a pivotal figure in shaping DC adaptations, contributed to the film’s story, introducing elements such as The Trench from his Aquaman comics arc.

The film’s ensemble cast further elevates its appeal. Nicole Kidman and Temura Morrison shine in their roles as Atlanna and Thomas, Arthur’s parents, grounding the film with warmth. Amber Heard’s Princess Mera adds depth to Arthur’s journey, navigating the complexities of their evolving relationship. Willem Dafoe, Dolph Lundgren, and Patrick Wilson deliver standout performances, with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stealing the show as the menacing Black Manta.

Five years since its debut, Aquaman remains a compelling watch—a superhero film that transcends its genre, delivering an adventure reminiscent of classics like Romancing the Stone and Indiana Jones. As audiences anticipate the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the sequel’s ability to match or surpass its predecessor remains to be seen.
