Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have finally broken their silence on the canceled Star Wars project that had left fans intrigued. After the massive success of Game of Thrones, the duo was set to collaborate with Disney and Lucasfilm on a Star Wars trilogy. However, the ambitious venture, which aimed to explore ‘The First Jedi’ and delve into the origins of the Jedi Order and the creation of the first lightsaber, faced an unexpected roadblock.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Benioff revealed that their specific story idea for ‘The First Jedi’ trilogy did not align with Lucasfilm’s vision at the time. The project, which had initially received the green light, ultimately stalled, leading to the departure of Benioff and Weiss from the Star Wars franchise in 2019.
Interestingly, the narrative echoes a familiar tune, as James Mangold’s recent Star Wars project, announced during the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, shares a striking resemblance to Benioff and Weiss’s initial concept. Mangold’s film, described as a “biblical epic,” is set to explore the “dawn of the Jedi,” taking place 25,000 years before A New Hope. This parallel development raises questions about why Mangold’s take on a similar theme was embraced while Benioff and Weiss’s version faced rejection.
Benioff expressed understanding, noting that Lucasfilm made the decision not to pursue their envisioned ‘First Jedi’ story. He acknowledged that it’s their company and intellectual property, emphasizing that they simply weren’t the creative fit at that time.
As the details surrounding the canceled project resurface, the spotlight is once again on Benioff and Weiss, who are gearing up for their post-Game of Thrones venture, Netflix’s ‘3 Body Problem.’ While the reasons for the divergence in Star Wars projects remain unclear, the return of the acclaimed duo to the limelight may lead to further insights into the dynamics that shaped these creative decisions.
