As the DCEU officially concludes this year, another DC Comics superhero movie, previously in development at Warner Bros., has been canceled.
With James Gunn’s DC Universe set to launch, plans for the Zatanna movie have been scrapped. The DCEU’s timeline wraps up with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, leading into James Gunn’s vision for the DC Universe. However, the conclusion of the DCEU has come with its challenges, including the cancellation of several in-development projects.
As 2023 comes to a close, another DC movie from the previous DC Films division has been confirmed as canceled ahead of the new DC Universe. Emerald Fennell, during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, confirmed that her Zatanna movie has been axed. She shared insights into the project and its connection to J.J. Abrams’ vision for the Dark Universe:
“No, no, it’s not happening. I loved it [though] This was something I was working on before [Promising Young Woman]. It was when J.J. Abrams had just arrived at Warner Bros. and was going to reboot the Dark Universe, and they were going to make this kind of dark villain universe or sort of hero/villain universe. I thought he was the coolest, and his team at Robot was so cool and interesting, and because I love genre of all kinds. I was definitely interested. I was like, ‘I don’t know a huge amount about the whole superhero genre; it’s not a genre I naturally gravitate towards, so I’d love to know how does one make [a superhero film] like that, for someone like me who doesn’t know so much and wouldn’t necessarily buy a ticket for that first time around. So it was that kinda thing, and Zatanna was a really, really cool character.”
Regarding J.J. Abrams’ Justice League Dark Franchise, initial plans for a DCEU film evolved into a shared universe spanning DC TV and movies by Abrams. This universe, linked to Max (formerly HBO Max), was intended to have series tied to films, with Zatanna being the only confirmed movie from the franchise. However, despite Abrams’ overall deal with Warner Bros., nothing materialized on the DC front.
Constantine, Zatanna, and Madame X were initially considered for other platforms after being passed on by Max. While a Swamp Thing movie is in the works for the DC Universe, Abrams’ entire Justice League Dark franchise has been halted.
The hope lingers that Justice League Dark might find a place in the new DC Universe, especially considering the untapped potential of DC’s supernatural side. With numerous compelling characters at their disposal, it remains to be seen if James Gunn and Peter Safran will explore the possibility of incorporating the team into their franchise. The fate of Justice League Dark in the evolving DC Universe is yet to be unveiled.
