Disney Stops Making Live-Action Movies

The Walt Disney Company has made a significant decision to halt the production of one of its upcoming live-action film projects. Disney’s live-action adaptations of classic animated movies have been a consistent presence, continuously expanding the studio’s repertoire and offering audiences fresh interpretations of beloved stories. However, recent years have seen these adaptations become a point of contention among fans, with debates ranging from casting choices, such as Halle Bailey’s portrayal of Ariel in “The Little Mermaid,” to concerns over the lack of original storytelling, as seen with “Moana.”

Amidst this ongoing slate of live-action adaptations, one project that has stirred both anticipation and controversy is the remake of “Snow White,” slated for release in 2025. Starring Rachel Zegler as the titular princess, this reimagining has been a focal point of discussion, with debates over its fidelity to the original animated classic and its potential impact at the box office. Similarly, the announcement of a live-action version of “Moana,” a film released just a few years ago in 2016, has raised eyebrows among fans. Scheduled for release next year, this unexpected remake faces competition from an animated sequel, “Moana 2,” which unexpectedly arrived in 2024.

Beyond these projects, Disney has ambitious plans for further live-action adaptations, including “Lilo & Stitch,” “Hercules,” “Bambi,” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” and “Maleficent 3.” However, amidst this flurry of activity, one project has hit a snag.

Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, originally attached to helm the live-action remake of “The Sword in the Stone,” revealed that the project has been put on hold. This adaptation of the 1963 animated classic has been in development since 2015, with Fresnadillo expressing his hope that it will eventually move forward. Despite his enthusiasm for the project and his desire to incorporate lessons learned from his recent work on the fantasy epic “Damsel,” starring Millie Bobby Brown, Fresnadillo remains uncertain about the fate of “The Sword in the Stone.”

The decision to halt production on “The Sword in the Stone” reflects Disney’s ongoing strategic reassessment under the leadership of CEO Bob Iger, who returned to the helm in late 2022. Iger’s tenure has seen aggressive budget cuts and a reevaluation of the studio’s film and television projects, resulting in the removal and cancellation of several productions.

However, amidst these challenges, Disney’s live-action division continues to forge ahead with other projects. Upcoming releases include “Snow White” and “Moana,” directed by Marc Webb and Thomas Kail, respectively, as well as “Mufasa: The Lion King,” a prequel to Jon Favreau’s 2019 adaptation directed by Barry Jenkins.

Looking further ahead, Dean Fleischer Camp is set to direct the live-action “Lilo & Stitch,” while Guy Ritchie takes the helm for “Hercules,” with casting underway for a person of color to portray the titular Greek god. Meanwhile, Sarah Polley’s departure from the live-action “Bambi” project has left its future uncertain, and projects such as “Robin Hood” and “The Aristocats” are also in development under directors Carlos López Estrada and Questlove, respectively. Additionally, Angelina Jolie has confirmed a third installment in the “Maleficent” franchise.

While the status of “The Sword in the Stone” remains uncertain, initial plans suggested that if production were to resume, the film would debut on Disney+, rather than in theaters. Thus, while this particular project may have hit a temporary roadblock, Disney’s commitment to live-action adaptations remains steadfast, with a diverse array of projects in various stages of development.
