DreamWorks Animation has recently undertaken a workforce reduction, eliminating approximately 70 positions across various departments, encompassing corporate functions, feature, television, and technology. This strategic move is part of the studio’s broader initiative to reduce costs. A spokesperson from DreamWorks Animation shared insights into the decision, stating, “DreamWorks Animation reduced its workforce by approximately 70 positions. Roles affected were across corporate functions, feature, television, and technology departments as part of an overall cost reduction.”
The timing of this staff reduction coincides with DreamWorks Animation’s preparations for the release of “Trolls Band Together,” scheduled for November 17. The film is the third installment in the successful “Trolls” franchise and features the return of Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake, with the added attraction of the first new ‘N Sync song in over two decades.
Despite the anticipation surrounding “Trolls Band Together,” DreamWorks Animation faced a box office setback earlier this year with the release of “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” which garnered $44.7 million globally, falling short of expectations. However, the studio experienced considerable success in the previous year with “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” which achieved a global box office revenue of $481 million. This particular film not only resonated with audiences but also earned several accolades, including an Oscar nomination for the best-animated feature film.
In addition to its feature film endeavors, DreamWorks Animation maintains a presence on the television landscape with productions like “Gabby’s Dollhouse,” which is available for streaming on Netflix. As the studio navigates these shifts in its workforce and strategic focus, industry observers are keenly watching how these decisions will impact DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming projects and its broader position in the entertainment landscape.
