Hunter x Hunter: Why & How did the king die? Explained

Hunter x Hunter, created by Yoshihiro Togashi, is a beloved series known for its captivating storyline, thrilling battles, vast cast of characters, and their growth over the course of the series. The manga consists of over eight arcs, with the ninth currently in the making, and each arc providing great content to its viewers. Among them, the Chimera Ant arc is particularly popular because of its plot, fights, and characters.

The Chimera Ant arc features the chimera ants, who are on a mission to completely eradicate the population while simultaneously producing hundreds of young ants for the next generation. The arc is primarily focused on the King of Chimera Ants, Meruem, who is one of the most difficult foes in the series. As the main antagonist, Meruem’s evolution as a villain is depicted from being an offspring of the Chimera Ant Queen to becoming one of the most powerful offspring.

Initially, Meruem was portrayed as a brutal and violent leader who had no concern for anyone other than himself. However, as the series progresses, Meruem develops a relationship with a human girl named Komugi, which leads to his perspective changing. He begins to grapple with his dual identity as a human and an insect, as well as the nature of violence and what true power really is.

Despite his character development, Meruem had to be killed in Hunter x Hunter, as he was humanity’s number one enemy. To satisfy his hunger, he would eat humans who were Nen-users. Furthermore, Meruem killed the dictator of East Gorteau, Ming Jol-ik, and ordered Neferpitou to reassemble his corpse in order to keep a puppet king and create the kingdom a meat plantation.

The climax of the Chimera Ant arc is the fight between Meruem and Netero, which ends with Netero using the Poor Man’s Rose inside his body to explode and engulf Meruem in a massively powerful blast. As a result, Meruem is severely injured, his limbs are mangled, and his entire body is burned.

Although Meruem survives, he experiences partial amnesia and only wants to be with Komugi. After learning the truth from Welfin about Pouf hiding something from him, Meruem realizes that he is running out of time due to the poison from Netero’s final assault. He wants to spend his final moments with Komugi and asks Palm to take him to her. They have one last game of Gungi, and Meruem recognizes the superiority of humans over his own species.

In conclusion, the Chimera Ant arc is one of the most popular arcs in Hunter x Hunter, and Meruem’s character development and tragic end have made him one of the most iconic villains in anime history. His journey from a brutal and violent leader to a compassionate and thoughtful individual is a testament to the power of character development and the impact it can have on a story.
