Prepare for the adventure! Moana 2 is set to hit theaters on November 27, 2024. Disney surprised fans with this announcement, coinciding with the release date of Wicked: Part One.
Disney CEO Bob Iger expressed excitement about expanding the beloved Moana franchise, promising audiences more of Moana and Maui in the upcoming sequel. The official synopsis reveals an epic journey as Moana, accompanied by Maui and a new crew, answers the call of her wayfinding ancestors to explore uncharted waters.
Dave Derrick Jr., known for his work on Disney projects like Strange World and the original Moana, will direct the film. Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy winners for their Unofficial Bridgerton Musical, will contribute original songs alongside Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa’i, who worked on the music for the first film. Although Lin-Manuel Miranda won’t return, the sequel’s creative team promises an exciting new soundtrack.
While it’s uncertain if Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson will reprise their roles as Moana and Maui, Iger revealed that Moana 2 was initially envisioned as a series but impressed Disney executives enough to merit a theatrical release. He also confirmed the ongoing development of a live-action adaptation starring Johnson, directed by Thomas Kail of Hamilton fame.
Moana 2 marks Walt Disney Animation Studios’ fifth theatrical sequel, following hits like The Rescuers Down Under, Fantasia 2000, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Frozen II. Get ready for another unforgettable voyage with Moana and her friends!
