Hayden Christensen Reflects on Prequel Experience with George Lucas

In a recent interview, Hayden Christensen, renowned for his portrayal of Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, reflected on his experience working alongside franchise creator George Lucas. Speaking to Empire magazine on the occasion of the prequel era’s 25th anniversary, Christensen offered insights into his collaborative dynamic with Lucas, whom he praised as a “visionary.” He described Lucas as someone who possessed a clear vision for the Star Wars universe but was also receptive to hearing the input of his actors.

Christensen recalled instances where he proposed ideas to Lucas, even though they might not have ultimately made it into the final cut of the films. Despite this, he appreciated Lucas’s willingness to allow him to experiment and explore different creative avenues. Christensen recounted moments where Lucas would listen to his suggestions and agree to give them a try, albeit with the understanding that ultimately, Lucas would have the final say in the editing room.

One particular suggestion that did make it into the films was the inclusion of Anakin Skywalker’s yellow Sith eyes in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Christensen believed that this visual transformation effectively signaled Anakin’s descent into darkness as he embraced the Sith side of the Force. Although initially unsure if Lucas would approve, Christensen was pleasantly surprised when Lucas reconsidered and embraced the idea of incorporating Sith eyes into Anakin’s character arc.

However, not all of Christensen’s suggestions were implemented, as Lucas often had his own vision for the direction of the story. Despite this, Christensen appreciated the collaborative process and recognized Lucas’s expertise in crafting the Star Wars narrative.

The interview also touched upon the broader legacy of the prequel trilogy, which initially faced mixed reviews upon release. However, over time, fans and critics alike have come to appreciate the depth and complexity of the storytelling, particularly in its exploration of Anakin Skywalker’s journey from Jedi Knight to Sith Lord.

Anakin’s character development continued beyond the prequel trilogy in the acclaimed animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This series provided further insight into Anakin’s gradual disillusionment with the Jedi Order and introduced the character of Ahsoka Tano, Anakin’s Padawan learner. Ahsoka has since become a beloved figure in the Star Wars universe, making appearances in subsequent animated series and even in live-action adaptations such as The Mandalorian.
