How DC and Marvel Comics Could Address DCU and MCU’s Major Issues

While the DCU and MCU have seen tremendous success in their cinematic endeavors, there are notable missteps that could be rectified through the comic book medium. Despite the massive popularity of films like Aquaman, Avengers: Endgame, and Captain America: Civil War, the translation of this success into comic book sales has been less impactful. The discrepancy in tone and portrayals between movies and comics has left some fans wondering how to better leverage the films to boost comic sales.

Rather than merely relying on traditional tie-in books, comics have a unique opportunity to lead narratives that the movies may have overlooked. Both the MCU and DCEU have made storytelling mistakes, leaving open-ended or unexplored ideas. With iconic heroes either retired or deceased, relationships fractured, and story arcs concluded, comics can seize the opportunity to attract new readers by continuing and expanding upon these disrupted storylines.

Comic book publishers have historically attempted to capitalize on movie releases through tie-ins and adaptations, but the results have often fallen short in terms of fan interest and sales. However, recent endeavors by DC, such as sequels to classic movies like Tim Burton’s Batman and Richard Donner’s Superman, demonstrate a shift toward genuine storytelling rather than mere advertisements. Creators like Robert Venditti, Wilfredo Torres, Sam Hamm, and Joe Quinones were given the freedom to craft sequels unbound by pre-set narratives, presenting an authentic approach to continuing beloved stories.

Marvel and DC now have numerous opportunities to extend film storylines in the comic book realm. For instance, continuing Zack Snyder’s vision for the DCEU through an imprint or addressing irreversible decisions in the MCU, like the break-up of Peter Quill and Gamora, provides rich narrative ground. The loss of planned projects, such as Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 or Nicolas Cage’s Superman, offers potential for comics to provide fans with the conclusions they crave.

Comics have the advantage of fewer restrictions and licensing issues, allowing them to delve deeper into storylines and explore imaginative crossovers that movies might avoid due to logistical and budgetary constraints. The ability to bring together characters from different timelines or mediums, like Prime Earth Batman interacting with cinematic counterparts, is a powerful tool in the hands of comic creators. The comics can deliver fan service by answering unanswered questions or providing official conclusions to loose-ended stories, offering a unique and immersive experience.

While movies may generate billions at the box office, comics remain the birthplace of these iconic characters and stories. Comics have the freedom to go beyond the limitations of current technology and budget restrictions, offering an inexpensive way to explore ageless versions of beloved heroes in epic and wide-reaching adventures. Instead of producing tie-in books as an afterthought, Marvel and DC can take the initiative to expand on cinematic narratives, creating an entirely new reader base in the process.
