Is there sufficient new content to create another Hunter x Hunter anime?

Hunter x Hunter is a popular manga series written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi, known for his work on the acclaimed Yu Yu Hakusho. The story follows a young boy named Gon Freecss, who sets out to become a Hunter like his father, and his adventures as he encounters friends and foes while learning about the world around him. The manga has been published in Weekly Shonen Jump since March 1998, and it has received multiple anime adaptations over the years, the most recent of which aired from 2011 to 2014.

Despite its popularity, Hunter x Hunter has had a tumultuous publication history. The manga has gone on hiatus several times due to Togashi’s declining health, with the longest hiatus being from 2018 to 2022. However, despite these setbacks, Togashi has continued to work on the series, and it has gained a dedicated fanbase that eagerly awaits each new chapter.

Given the popularity of the manga, it’s not surprising that fans have been eagerly anticipating a continuation of the anime adaptation. However, the question remains: is there enough material in the manga to justify another anime season?

To answer that question, it’s important to look at what has already been adapted. Hunter x Hunter has had two separate anime adaptations: one that began in 1999 and one that started up later in 2011. The 1999 adaptation quickly caught up to the manga and ended after only 62 episodes. The series was followed up by several OVAs which continued to adapt the manga up until the Greed Island arc, with a total episode count of 92.

The 2011 anime re-adapted the entire series from the beginning, providing a more faithful adaptation of the original manga. With more material to cover, the 2011 anime adapted the Chimera Ant arc and the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc along with all of the arcs the 1999 anime covered, totaling 148 episodes. In total, 339 chapters of the manga have been adapted into anime, which is a significant portion of the manga.

However, there is still some unadapted content in the manga. The current storyline is focused on a mysterious area called the Dark Continent, with Gon and Killua, the main characters up until now, being completely absent. Instead, the series focuses on Kurapika, who has been hired as a bodyguard for one of the queens of the Kakin Empire, which has sponsored an expedition into the Dark Continent. He ends up getting caught up in a secret succession contest between the fourteen Kakin princes, who are fighting for the right to be the next king. At the same time, several factions, including the Phantom Troupe, have secretly infiltrated the expedition in order to achieve their own goals.

The unadapted content is so far composed of two arcs: the very short Dark Continent arc which introduces the titular location and the expedition for it, and the ongoing Succession Contest arc that concerns the battle between the princes of the Kakin Empire. Altogether, the unadapted content adds up to around 61 chapters, which is not even close to the amount covered in the 2011 anime. However, it isn’t impossible to put together 12 or so episodes with that amount of content.

Despite the amount of unadapted material, the biggest issue facing a new adaptation is the fact that the current arc is far from being finished in the manga. While there is technically enough content in the manga to put together a short one-cour or even two-cour run, the lack of a conclusion would only leave fans unsatisfied and wondering why an attempt at continuation was even made in the first place. It’s likely that a new anime adaptation wouldn’t even be considered until the current storyline
