Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom delivered unexpected twists, but Jason Momoa inadvertently unveiled the DCEU film’s conclusion a year and a half before its release.
Despite the success of 2018’s Aquaman, which remains the highest-grossing DCEU movie with a $1.1 billion worldwide total, the sequel expanded on Arthur Curry’s underwater world. The film featured Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta as a heightened threat due to his connection to the ominous Black Trident.
Notably, Pilou Asbæk portrayed King Kordax, a pivotal character in the movie. Kordax, the brother of King Atlan, was imprisoned by his powerful brother after corrupting the lost kingdom, Necrus, turning its citizens into mindless beings and waging war on Atlan. After Aquaman thwarted Kordax’s resurrection, the film’s ending took an unexpected turn. Interestingly, Momoa had inadvertently spoiled this climax a year and a half prior.
In an August 2022 interview with British GQ, Momoa shared some details about Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’s narrative related to climate change, emphasizing the film’s relevance to current environmental issues. Notably, the interview revealed a scene where Aquaman’s alter-ego, Arthur Curry, delivers a significant speech to the UN, warning them of impending disaster. This UN scene ultimately became the conclusion of the DCEU’s final movie, with Arthur Curry unveiling Atlantis to the human world and concluding his impassioned speech by proclaiming, ‘I am Aquaman.’
It’s worth noting that the early reveal of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’s ending may have been influenced by the movie’s evolution during production. Director James Wan has discussed the film’s changes due to the new DC Universe, including the removal of scenes featuring two Batman actors, Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton. Recent comments from Dolph Lundgren further highlighted the movie’s reshoots, suggesting that the early disclosure of the ending was a result of the film’s dynamic creative process.
