Jon Favreau is set to direct a new ‘Star Wars’ movie titled ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu

Jon Favreau, renowned for his success with the hit series “The Mandalorian,” is set to helm a new chapter in the Star Wars cinematic universe. The upcoming film, titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” signifies a significant milestone as the first Star Wars movie to enter production since the release of “The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019.

Favreau expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.” This venture promises to continue the narrative of the beloved characters introduced in Favreau’s series, with Grogu, the enigmatic and endearing character formerly known as Baby Yoda, taking center stage alongside the iconic Mandalorian.

For those who may have missed the initial seasons of “The Mandalorian,” Season 2 unveiled the true name of the 50-something-year-old Grogu. The film is anticipated to commence production later this year under the watchful eyes of Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy and newly appointed Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni, who will also serve as producers.

Kathleen Kennedy shared her perspective on the collaboration, stating, “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.” This cinematic expansion follows the success of Favreau’s series, which not only spawned spin-offs like “Ahsoka” and “The Book of Boba Fett” but also contributed to the ever-expanding Star Wars universe.

Lucasfilm’s announcement comes more than four years after the launch of Disney+, coinciding with the debut of “The Mandalorian.” The series, created by Favreau, has since become a cornerstone for Star Wars storytelling on the streaming platform. Alongside “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” Lucasfilm previously revealed plans for three other marquee Star Wars films.

One of these films will feature Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey, set 15 years after the sequel trilogy, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, known for her work on “Ms. Marvel.” Another, directed by James Mangold, titled “Dawn of the Jedi,” delves into the distant past, exploring the origins of the Jedi and the Force. Additionally, Dave Filoni is set to direct a crossover film that will unite the storylines of Disney+’s Mandalorian-related series.
