Yen Press has released an English version of the manga series, Kakegurui Twins. Netflix recently announced its plans to produce an anime adaptation of the spinoff manga, titled Kakegurui Twin. The anime is set to premiere on Netflix in August 2022. The renowned animation studio, MAPPA, will be in charge of producing the anime, and Minami Tanaka will be reprising her role as Meari Saotome.
The spinoff manga serves as a prequel to the popular Kakegurui series by Homura Kawamoto and Tōru Naomura. It follows the story of Mary Saotome, a regular girl who enters the gambling-addicted Hyakkou Private Academy, where she strives to achieve her own rags-to-riches tale through wit and luck.
The original Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler manga was launched in March 2014 in Square Enix’s Gangan Joker magazine. Yen Press has obtained the license to release the English version of the manga. This manga series also inspired a television anime adaptation that aired in Japan from July to September 2017. Netflix began streaming the series internationally in February 2018, with a second season premiering in January 2019. Both seasons have been licensed by Sentai Filmworks, who will release them on home video with an English dub.
The Kakegurui franchise has further expanded with a live-action series that premiered on Amazon Prime in Japan on March 26. Additionally, a live-action show with 10 episodes debuted in Japan in January 2018, followed by a second season in March 2019. The first live-action film was released in May 2019, with a sequel opening in Japan on June 1, 2023, after being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to Kakegurui Twins, the original manga has also inspired two other spinoff manga and two novels. Netflix Japan’s anime Twitter account confirmed the August 2022 premiere of the Kakegurui Twin anime, mentioning that MAPPA will produce the series, and Minami Tanaka will return to voice the character Meari Saotome.
