“LOS ANGELES — Universal Pictures celebrated a dual triumph over the weekend as it geared up for the Academy Awards. While preparing for the Oscars with “Oppenheimer,” the studio toasted the stellar debut of “Kung Fu Panda 4,” which raked in an impressive $58.3 million in domestic theaters, according to Sunday’s estimates.
Marking the triumphant return of DreamWorks Animation’s beloved franchise after a five-year hiatus since its last installment in 2016, “Kung Fu Panda 4” enjoyed a robust opening weekend, trailing closely behind the 2008 original’s $60.2 million debut. Benefiting from being the first major family film release since December’s “Migration” and “Wonka,” “Kung Fu Panda 4” also garnered an additional $22 million internationally.
Meanwhile, “Dune: Part Two” continued its strong performance in its second week, witnessing a modest 44% drop in revenue. Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic sequel grossed $46 million, pushing its domestic total to $157 million for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. Bolstered by positive reviews and word-of-mouth, along with its epic storyline featuring sandworms, “Dune: Part Two” appears poised for a prolonged theatrical run and potential recognition at future Academy Awards ceremonies.
Debuting in third place was Lionsgate and Blumhouse’s horror release “Imaginary,” which scared up $10 million in its opening weekend. Following closely behind was “Cabrini,” a biographical film about 19th-century Catholic missionary Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, distributed by Angel Studios, the same studio behind the 2023 surprise hit “Sound of Freedom,” which earned $7.5 million.
Additionally, A24 introduced the highly acclaimed neo-noir “Love Lies Bleeding,” starring Kristen Stewart, on limited screens in New York and Los Angeles, amassing $167,463 with a solid per-screen average of $33,493.
