Shigeru Miyamoto, the visionary behind the Super Mario Bros. franchise, is returning in a producing capacity for yet another cinematic endeavor. This announcement comes hot on the heels of the resounding success of the initial Super Mario Bros. Movie, which soared to billion-dollar heights. In a collaboration between Nintendo, the custodian of the cherished gaming series, and Illumination Studios, known for their animated hits, a new film “based on the world of Super Mario Bros.” has been unveiled.
Miyamoto took to Nintendo’s official Twitter account to share the exciting news with fans worldwide. In his statement, he revealed that the film is slated for a theatrical release on April 3rd, 2026, in the US, with plans for distribution in various other markets throughout the same month. His mention of “broadening Mario’s world” hints at a narrative that will delve deeper into the colorful and whimsical universe inhabited by Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom’s inhabitants.
Interestingly, while the project is notably not labeled as a sequel, Miyamoto’s emphasis on expanding the world of Mario suggests that audiences can expect a fresh perspective that builds upon the foundation laid by its predecessor. This approach aligns with Nintendo’s history of spotlighting various characters from the Mario franchise in standalone adventures, such as Luigi’s Mansion, Yoshi’s Island, and the upcoming Princess Peach game.
In addition to Miyamoto’s return, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri will also reprise his role as a producer for the film. Furthermore, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the creative minds behind the original movie, will once again take the helm as directors, while Matthew Fogel will lend his talent to crafting the screenplay.
Nintendo’s commitment to delivering unique entertainment experiences remains unwavering, with the company aiming to reach as wide an audience as possible. Beyond the Super Mario Bros. film, Nintendo has ambitious plans in the pipeline, including the launch of its highly anticipated Nintendo Switch successor and an upcoming collaboration with Sony for a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda franchise.
As anticipation for the new Super Mario Bros. film continues to mount, fans can look forward to further updates and insights into the creative process behind this exciting cinematic journey. With Miyamoto’s guiding hand and the combined expertise of Nintendo and Illumination Studios, the stage is set for another unforgettable adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom.
