Not all DC movies coming to Netflix are created equal, and as of December 1, the streaming giant will be offering a selection of 12 DCEU movies, albeit excluding ‘Aquaman.’ While there’s excitement for the arrival of popular hits like ‘The Batman’ and ‘Wonder Woman,’ not every film in the lineup is worth the watch.
Starting with ‘Man of Steel’ from 2013, Zack Snyder’s inaugural entry into the DCEU, the movie served as a reboot for Superman, with Henry Cavill donning the iconic cape. It’s deemed as perfectly acceptable superhero fare, falling more in line with audience consensus than harsher critical reviews, boasting a 3.9 out of 5 stars on Rotten Tomatoes.
On a brighter note, ‘Wonder Woman’ from 2017 stands out as a genuinely good addition to the DCEU. Starring Gal Gadot as Diana Prince, this film offers an enjoyable origin story and an engaging World War I period piece. The on-screen chemistry between Gadot and Chris Pine as Steve Trevor adds an extra layer of appeal, making it a worthwhile watch.
For those seeking a fun and family-friendly option, ‘Shazam!’ from 2019 is a top choice. Starring Zachary Levi as the adult superhero Shazam and Asher Angel as his 14-year-old alter ego, the film presents another origin story but introduces a refreshing tone distinct from the rest of the DCEU.
‘Birds of Prey’ (2020), also known as ‘Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),’ offers a unique blend of origin story and wild adventure. Featuring Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn breaking out of her shell and forming new friendships, the film is a fun and enjoyable option, even if it doesn’t reach ‘Citizen Kane’ levels.
Moving on to ‘The Suicide Squad’ from 2021, directed by James Gunn, this movie should not be confused with the 2016 offering from David Ayer. Violent and intense, it stands as a favorite among the DCEU movies, even if it’s technically a sequel to the 2016 ‘Suicide Squad.’
One of the standout releases of 2022, ‘The Batman,’ offers a fresh take on the Dark Knight, with Robert Pattinson delivering a dark and brooding portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman. While the film may be criticized for its length, it remains an engaging addition to the Batman lore.
For those in search of family-friendly animated content, ‘DC League of Super-Pets’ (2022) could be a suitable choice. Featuring Keanu Reeves as the voice of Batman, the film shifts the focus to the pets of DC Universe superheroes, providing an enjoyable option for family movie nights.
On the flip side, the ‘skip’ list includes ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ (2016), labeled as the worst movie, with a flat storyline and subpar acting. ‘Suicide Squad’ (2016) also gets a pass, deemed boring and a messy disappointment. ‘Justice League’ (2017), despite having a director’s cut, is considered too slow and lacking character depth.
‘Wonder Woman: 1984’ (2020), while not terrible, is considered the most disappointing, failing to live up to the promise of its predecessor. Lastly, ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ (2023), despite not being personally seen, falls into the category of mediocre superhero movies, with critics suggesting it lacks the charm of the original.
In summary, the arrival of DC movies on Netflix brings both hits and misses, catering to different tastes within the superhero genre.
