DreamWorks Animation’s latest hit has officially made its debut, featuring an impressive ensemble cast. On Thursday, DreamWorks unveiled the first trailer for ‘Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,’ an upcoming animated film set to be released by Universal later this summer. The trailer not only showcases the film’s charming visuals but also introduces some of its star-studded cast, led by Lana Condor (known for ‘To All the Boys’ and ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’).
The ensemble includes Toni Collette (‘Knives Out’), Academy Award winner Jane Fonda (’80 for Brady’), Emmy winner Colman Domingo (‘Euphoria’), Emmy winner Annie Murphy (‘Schitt’s Creek’), Sam Richardson (‘Detroiters’), Blue Chapman (‘Council Of Dads’), and Jaboukie Young-White (‘C’mon C’mon’). The film is directed by Kirk DeMicco, co-directed by Faryn Pearl, and written by Pam Brady.
‘Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken’ revolves around sweet and socially awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman (portrayed by Condor), who longs to fit in at Oceanside High. She finds herself tutoring her skater-boy crush (Young-White), who seems to appreciate her mainly for her knack for fractals. Her overprotective mother (Collette) forbids her from going near the water and hanging out with the cool kids at the beach. However, Ruby’s life takes a remarkable turn when she inadvertently breaks her mother’s strict rules. She discovers her lineage as a direct descendant of the formidable Kraken queens and her destiny to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother (Jane Fonda), the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas.
The Kraken are tasked with safeguarding the world’s oceans from the power-hungry mermaids, their ancient adversaries. The situation becomes even more complicated when the school’s beautiful and popular new girl, Chelsea (Murphy), is revealed to be a mermaid. Ruby must embrace her true identity and rise to protect her loved ones.
Completing the cast of ‘Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken’ are Emmy-nominated actors Will Forte and Nicole Byer, along with Liza Koshy, Ramona Young, Eduardo Franco, and Echo Kellum. While the screenwriter’s identity is yet to be confirmed, Kelly Cooney Cilella, known for the ‘Trolls’ franchise, serves as the film’s producer, and Grammy-winning composer Stephanie Economou, an alum of the Universal Composers Initiative, has crafted the score.
