News: Disney Urged Early Announcement of MCU Phase Six Films

A recent report unveils Disney’s hastening of Marvel’s Phase Six project announcements, disclosing that Marvel was compelled to reveal Armor Wars and Fantastic Four prematurely.

According to revelations from the book “MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios,” co-authored by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards, Disney’s CEO Bob Iger and executive Bob Chapek pressured Marvel into prematurely disclosing Armor Wars and Fantastic Four. This transpired during Disney Investor Day 2020, convened in response to the COVID-19 pandemic’s disruption to Hollywood. Despite Marvel’s reluctance, the event aimed to assuage investor concerns, prompting Marvel president Kevin Feige and Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy to unveil several projects, including the aforementioned Phase Six films. Notably, these projects were not sufficiently developed at the time.

The challenges faced by Armor Wars and Fantastic Four subsequently seem to substantiate the claims put forth in “The Reign of Marvel Studios.” Armor Wars, initially slated as a Disney+ TV series, underwent a significant overhaul, transitioning to a theatrical production. The film, featuring Don Cheadle reprising his role as James “Rhodey” Rhodes/War Machine, has been enshrouded in silence since its confirmation. Speculation abounds that James Spader may return as Ultron in the movie.

In the case of Fantastic Four, the movie has been marked by persistent casting rumors, with no official announcements from Marvel. However, potential cast details have surfaced, with Pedro Pascal linked to Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic and Vanessa Kirby not refuting rumors of her portrayal of Sue Storm/Invisible Woman. Reportedly, Sue will assume a central role in the film. Although Fantastic Four is slated for a May 2, 2025 release, the SAG-AFTRA strike may lead to delays, as the blockbuster is currently in pre-production.

Additionally, the Marvel Cinematic Universe faces challenges, with Ironheart, another project from the 2020 meeting, experiencing a significant delay to align its release with Armor Wars. The Fantastic Four, intended as a reboot of the troubled film franchise, has encountered hurdles reminiscent of its predecessors’ critical reception.

These revelations coincide with a tough period for the MCU, marked by The Marvels, a Phase Five movie, registering an all-time low opening weekend box office. Furthermore, uncertainties loom over the Blade reboot’s fate and the future of Kang the Conqueror in the MCU amid legal issues faced by actor Jonathan Majors.
