Shin’ichirô Watanabe, a highly influential figure in the creation of the original Cowboy Bebop series, has voiced his discontent with Netflix’s recent live-action adaptation, making it clear that he did not approve of the direction it took.

In a recent interview with Forbes, Watanabe shared his experience with the adaptation, stating, “For the new Netflix live-action adaptation, they sent me a video to review and check. It started with a scene in a casino, which made it very tough for me to continue.” He admitted that he only watched the opening scene before deciding it was not faithful to the essence of Cowboy Bebop. Realizing that his involvement was crucial to maintaining the authenticity of the series, Watanabe regretted not being part of the project, emphasizing the heightened value of the original anime in comparison.

Netflix’s iteration of Cowboy Bebop, featuring John Cho as Spike Spiegel, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, and Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine, premiered on November 19, 2021, but was abruptly canceled just three weeks later on December 9. Co-executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach addressed the cancellation, expressing disappointment and mentioning their plans for a potential second season, stating, “I wish we could make what we planned for a second season, but you know what they say, men plan, god laughs.” He further revealed that the team had an array of exciting ideas in store for the continuation of the series.
