Emil Pagliarulo, the design director at Bethesda Game Studios, recently revealed that Cowboy Bebop, the iconic bounty-hunting anime, served as one of the major inspirations for their highly anticipated space-faring RPG, Starfield. In a series of Twitter posts over the weekend, Pagliarulo shared a list of science fiction movies and television shows that have influenced the development team’s creative process.
Alongside Cowboy Bebop, Pagliarulo mentioned other notable works that have shaped the vision of Starfield. These include the 1997 horror film Event Horizon, the 1972 sci-fi classic Silent Running, and the British deep-space series from the ’70s, Space: 1999. While Pagliarulo didn’t explicitly specify whether he was referring to the anime or the ill-received 2021 live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, it is safe to assume that he was referring to the revered original series that revolutionized the genre.
Pagliarulo emphasized that the impact of science fiction on the Starfield development team has been far-reaching. He stated that there is not a single sci-fi movie or TV show that hasn’t left an imprint on their creative process. In his post, he humorously acknowledged that space is a vast realm that accommodates various inspirations and ideas.
Starfield, slated for release on September 6, will be exclusively available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Bethesda has planned a dedicated gaming showcase, known as Starfield Direct, which is set to stream on June 11. While details about the game’s plot remain scarce, the materials released by Bethesda suggest that players will embark on interstellar adventures, investigating anomalies and engaging in exhilarating space combat. As a Bethesda title, Starfield is expected to offer rich roleplaying elements, with a dialogue system that surpasses the scope of their acclaimed games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4. Fans eagerly await the unveiling of this ambitious sci-fi RPG and its immersive universe.
