The introduction of Stands in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure was a significant turning point for the series. If the series had continued with the Hamon power system, it could have potentially damaged its popularity. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is widely recognized for its distinct combat style, which features the usage of Stands. These Stands have an array of terrifying and unimaginable powers, and the characters have wielded them since Part Three, which is known as Stardust Crusaders. There are 174 different types of Stands, each possessing unique appearance, strength, and power. Examples include Jotaro Kujo’s Star Platinum, DIO’s The World, and Jolyne Kujoh’s Stone Free.
Before Stands were introduced, the main characters of the JoJo universe had a completely different power system known as Hamon. In Part One, Phantom Blood, Joseph Joestar mastered the mysterious martial art of Hamon, which allowed him to harness his breathing and transfer his life force into sunlight energy and perform tremendous physical attacks. However, with the release of Stardust Crusaders, the idea of Hamon was replaced by Stands, and even Dio Brando, the returning character from Part One, had acquired his own Stand. The reason for this change lies in both the narrative benefits observed by the author, Hirohiko Araki, and the desire for the manga to stand out from other martial arts manga of the late ’80s.
During the late 1980s, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure was not the only martial arts manga series that existed. Titles such as Dragon Ball Z and Fist on the North Star followed the fighting manga trope of power levels through their martial arts and power-ups through their chi-like techniques. The energy harnessed and blasted with Hamon was awfully similar to the chi of DBZ, and this meant that the series was just one of many in terms of visual conflicts, directly competing with the heavy-hitters of martial arts manga.
However, this style of combat had a significant flaw, which can be seen in more recent anime such as Naruto. As the story progresses, the author needs to keep increasing the power levels of their characters to raise the stakes. This means that the initial skills of the characters become redundant, and more and more explosive martial arts must be introduced to show the progression of the characters to the point where they’re able to throw world-destroying punches, such as in DBZ. While this can work for some titles, it meant that JJBA would not have become the iconic series it is today had it continued to follow this trend.
The introduction of Stands completely changed the direction of power levels and conflict, allowing Araki to create a far more intense, thoughtful, and intricate style of combat. Stands offered a new direction of fighting styles and power-ups, allowing Araki to show off his creativity, and it even allowed for weaker characters with more lethal Stands to defeat more powerful ones. By redirecting the intentions of the series, Araki not only created one of the most unique manga series of all time but also managed to increase the popularity of the series tremendously. The introduction of Stands ensured JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s longevity and popularity, making it one of the longest-running manga series ever produced. Without the decision to spice up the characters’ combat style, the series might not have been as successful as it is today, dwarfed by the likes of Dragon Ball Z.
