Why The Rings of Power isn’t linked to Peter Jackson’s LOTR films

Prime Video’s The Rings of Power, a television adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s renowned fantasy series, is set in an entirely distinct world from Peter Jackson’s iconic Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies. This marks the first television adaptation of Tolkien’s work, premiering on Prime Video in 2022 and offering a fresh perspective on the beloved fantasy universe.

Despite its successful capture of Tolkien’s magic and grandeur, The Rings of Power takes a noticeably different approach than the film trilogies, not only in storytelling but also in terms of casting. The series deliberately avoids any connection to Peter Jackson’s films, even going as far as recasting key characters such as Elrond and Galadriel. The reasons behind this intentional deviation are multi-faceted:

Legal Constraints: Amazon, in acquiring the television rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, found itself in a complex web of rights ownership. The film rights for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit were initially licensed by Jackson and New Line Cinema from Middle-Earth Enterprises. However, the television rights to these works, as well as other Tolkien creations like The Silmarillion, remained untouched. Warner Bros., now the owner of New Line Cinema, continued to license the film rights, albeit from Embracer Group, which acquired Middle-Earth Enterprises. Amazon, in the late-2010s, secured the television rights, allowing them to produce The Rings of Power.

The legal distinction lies in the fact that Warner Bros. and New Line own the specific film versions produced by Jackson. Connecting The Rings of Power to these films would necessitate a separate deal with Warner Bros., which Amazon did not pursue. Consequently, The Rings of Power and the Lord of the Rings films are legally distinct entities, precluding any explicit connections.

Reboot and Recasting: The deliberate separation from Jackson’s films led to the recasting of pivotal characters, including Elrond and Galadriel. This move was essential to establish The Rings of Power as a complete reboot of The Lord of the Rings saga. Without an agreement with Warner Bros., Amazon couldn’t directly tie the new series to the film adaptations, ensuring a fresh interpretation of the beloved source material.

Peter Jackson’s Involvement: While The Rings of Power was conceived independently of Jackson’s film trilogies, Amazon initially sought the involvement of Peter Jackson and co-writer Fran Walsh. Their input was seen as a means to steer the series in the right direction and gain the trust of fans. Composer Howard Shore, who created the iconic music for all six Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, was also brought back to compose the main musical theme for The Rings of Power. However, despite early collaboration discussions, Peter Jackson’s name was notably absent from the credits upon the series’ release.

Two Competing Versions: With The Rings of Power offering a fresh perspective on Middle-Earth, it might be assumed that this interpretation is now the definitive version. However, this is not the case, as Warner Bros. and New Line plan to revitalize the film franchise with new spin-offs and prequel films. The animated feature, The War of the Rohirrim, marks the beginning of this new era, set to release theatrically in Dec. 2024. Consequently, 2024 will witness the coexistence of two different adaptations of Middle-Earth, with The Rings of Power’s second season and The War of the Rohirrim’s release.

The Overlap Dilemma: Despite being separate entities, the success or failure of one adaptation could inadvertently impact the other. While The Rings of Power has not contradicted the films thus far, the potential reputational impact remains uncertain. A negative reception to either series could potentially diminish interest in the broader Tolkien adaptation genre. Therefore, both The Rings of Power and The War of the Rohirrim aim to create compelling versions of Tolkien’s stories, ensuring a satisfying experience for both dedicated fans and a new audience.
