JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure teases an unexpected background for DIO’s offspring

The latest chapter of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Crazy Diamond’s Demonic Heartbreak has fans of the series buzzing with excitement and speculation. Chapter 15 hints at a surprising origin story for DIO’s sons, a topic that has long been a source of confusion and criticism for fans of the series.

Ungalo, Rikiel, and Donatello Versus were introduced in the Stone Ocean arc of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure as DIO’s other sons. These characters were drawn to Pucci after he fused with the Green Child, and their existence has always been something of a contrivance in the series. It was surprising enough that DIO would let one woman, Giorno’s mother, escape him, but the idea that he allowed three more women to do so was considered odd and done solely as an excuse to bring new villains into the final act of Stone Ocean.

For years, there has been no great way to justify the existence of DIO’s other sons, until now. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Crazy Diamond’s Demonic Heartbreak, although not directly addressing the issue of their existence, heavily implies that chapter 15 provides an origin story for them that both stays true to the personalities of the people involved and provides the final redemption for one of the story’s leads.

The big implication for the origin of DIO’s other sons is that Hol Horse saved the lives of their mothers during the events of Stardust Crusaders. In chapter 15, there is a flashback showing Hol Horse coming across DIO’s pile of dead women, where he finds three women barely clinging to life. Despite initially wanting to ignore them, Hol Horse takes them out of DIO’s mansion and gets them to a hospital. The fact that it was specifically three women implies that Hol Horse was the one to get the mothers of Ungalo, Rikiel, and Donatello Versus away from DIO.

If the women Hol Horse saved were the mothers of DIO’s sons, then the scene does a lot to explain what was otherwise a contrivance while keeping true to the characters involved. Hol Horse has always had a weakness for women, so it’s in character for him to save them despite how scared he was of DIO, and for a misanthrope like DIO, it’s not unreasonable that he would pay too little attention to his victims to confirm that they were dead. All of that means the spinoff didn’t have to stretch anything to tie into Stone Ocean, making the reveal even stronger as a result.

In addition to explaining the origins of DIO’s sons, chapter 15 of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Crazy Diamond’s Demonic Heartbreak also works to finally complete Hol Horse’s redemption. The story has been fleshing out Hol Horse’s character to make him less one-dimensional, specifically giving him actions that have allowed him to grow into more of a heroic figure. Now, his saving the mothers of DIO’s sons completes that not only by retroactively making him more heroic but by using it to push him to not be a coward anymore when confronting Ryoko. It works especially well by being so in character with how he’s been written before.

Seeing Hol Horse become a heroic figure here is great to see because it makes up for his dropped redemption in Stardust Crusaders. Hirohiko Araki, the creator of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, originally toyed with the idea of Hol Horse becoming a protagonist, but ultimately dropped it because Hol Horse’s personality and Stand had too much overlap with Polnareff and Kakyoin. Thus, seeing Hol Horse become a heroic figure in this spinoff works to make up for that missed opportunity in the original manga. Seeing that story finally play out has been one of the highlights
