En’en no Shōbōtai, which is widely known as Fire Force, is a popular manga series created by Atsushi Ohkubo. It has gained immense popularity worldwide and its sales skyrocketed after the anime adaptation by David Production. As of May 2022, the manga had over 20 million copies in circulation worldwide.
The story of Fire Force revolves around a special firefighting team known as the Fire Force, which is tasked with putting out fires caused by people who have spontaneously combusted and turned into infernals, or demons. The team consists of various skilled members, including Shinra Kusakabe, who has the unique ability to run at the speed of a rocket and leave behind devil’s footprints.
Despite the slow pacing of the story, David Production has been praised for its amazing adaptation, with the studio adding its signature vibrant colors and fluid movements, making the action sequences feel more dynamic and intense. As season 3 is around the corner, fans who are impatient about what comes next are eager to learn the status of the manga.
Atsushi Ohkubo’s Fire Force manga ended its run on February 22, 2022, with the 304th chapter of volume 34. The manga began serialization on September 23, 2015, in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine. On May 17, 2022, Kodansha collected the chapters of the manga into 34 tankobon volumes.
Due to its immense popularity, the manga series was voted 13th in the Honya Club online bookstore’s “Nationwide Bookstore Employees’ Recommended Comics of 2017” poll. Fire Force also created a milestone by ranking 84th out of 100 mangas on TV Asahi’s Manga Sōsenkyo 2021 poll. The biggest achievement Ohkubo was ever lauded with was Fire Force being nominated in the shonen category at the 45th Kodansha Awards 2021.
The first two seasons of the anime adaptation adapted 20 volumes of the original manga series, comprising 174 chapters. The upcoming season will be picking up from chapter 175, “In the Center of Faith,” of volume 21, kicking off the Ōbi’s Rescue arc.
