“Hirohiko Araki, the mastermind behind JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, holds a deep admiration for Shrek, but even in his appreciation, there are flaws that catch his eye.
Amidst his ongoing work on The JOJOLands and its fresh arc featuring Jodio and Dragona, the latest Joestars, who are navigating the challenge of securing their mother’s financial well-being, fans continue to uncover intriguing insights about Araki. Recent revelations highlight his affinity for the green ogre, Shrek. However, Araki’s sentiment isn’t all-encompassing.
While he commends all the Shrek movies, Araki acknowledges that certain sequels fell short of the original’s allure. In an unearthed comment, he stated, “Every Shrek movie is captivating, from the premiere to the ultimate installment. Yet, I particularly favor Shrek 2. The endearing bond between Shrek and Fiona was expertly depicted until Shrek 2. However, with the introduction of their offspring in Shrek The Third, I got the impression that the movie was spawned merely due to the success of the prior two. It felt like a money-grab.”
In an unexpected twist, Araki extended his musings on the Shrek franchise, humorously likening it to Stone Ocean. He remarked, “Shrek’s appeal lies in his imperfection and ruggedness, so witnessing his transformation into a composed paternal figure feels somewhat dissatisfying. Even in manga, when protagonists become parents, I can’t help but ponder the outcome. Oh, and please exclude Jotaro becoming Jolyne’s father from that analogy, as that’s an entirely separate matter.”
Although Shrek has yet to grace the realm of anime, his legacy thrives amusingly through online culture. Evidently, the popularity of the Dreamworks character has transcended borders. However, the prospects of a Joestar-Shrek crossover remain slim. Nonetheless, Araki has previously woven non-Joestar fictional characters into the tapestry of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.”
