Jennifer Lee, the Chief Creative Officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios, has offered some tantalizing hints about what fans can anticipate in the upcoming Princess and the Frog sequel series, “Tiana.”
Originally announced by Disney in 2020 with a planned release on Disney+ for 2023, the series was subsequently postponed to 2024 but is still in progress. In a recent interview with eCartelera, Jennifer Lee expressed her enthusiasm for expanding the stories of beloved Disney movies like Moana and The Princess and the Frog. She teased that the series format would provide Tiana with a “new world” to explore, different from the original feature film.
Lee emphasized how Disney+ allows for experimentation and freshness while building on the legacy of these beloved characters. She highlighted the opportunity to explore a “new direction” and introduce a “new voice” for Tiana within the Disney+ series format. She sees it as a fantastic platform to delve into themes and stories that hold great significance to many viewers.
Jennifer Lee also acknowledged the evolving landscape of animation and storytelling, emphasizing the importance of technology in preserving traditional animation techniques. She expressed her excitement about the balance between sequels and original content, noting that beloved stories like Frozen and Zootropolis continue to evolve and expand because filmmakers are eager to explore new facets of these worlds.
The “Tiana” series, written and directed by Stella Meghie, will see Anika Noni Rose reprising her role as the voice of Tiana. The storyline follows the newly crowned Princess of Maldonia on a fresh adventure while still embracing her New Orleans roots.
Furthermore, there have been rumors circulating about a live-action adaptation of “The Princess and the Frog” in development at Disney, with Lupita Nyong’o reportedly considered for the lead role. However, these rumors remain unconfirmed, and Disney has not officially announced such a project.
As of now, a premiere date for the “Tiana” series on Disney+ has not been announced, but fans can currently enjoy “The Princess and the Frog” on the platform.
