Migration,’ ‘The Boy And The Heron,’ ‘Wish,’ and ‘Trolls’ Achieve Box Office Milestones

Four animated films achieved significant domestic and global box office milestones this past weekend. However, lingering uncertainties persist regarding the post-Covid box office landscape, especially concerning how success is defined for original animated features that aren’t sequels or based on existing intellectual properties (IPs).

Here’s a breakdown of the weekend’s box office highlights:

Migration

• Milestones: Grossed $150 million globally; Ranked as the 10th highest worldwide gross for an animated film in 2023.
• Illumination’s Migration earned an impressive $10.2 million during its third weekend in U.S. theaters, securing the fourth spot domestically. With a North American total of $77.8 million, the film is poised to surpass the $100 million mark soon.
• Globally, Migration secured the third spot, grossing $15.5 million from 73 territories for a total of $25.7 million. The film’s global cumulative now stands at $150.7 million, ranking it as the tenth highest-grossing animated feature in 2023.

The Boy and the Heron

• Milestones: Grossed $39.6 million in North America; Ranks as the fourth highest gross for an anime title in North American box office history.
• Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron added $1.7 million in North America over the weekend, pushing its total to $39.6 million. It now holds the position of the fourth highest-grossing anime title in U.S. box office history and recently won the Golden Globe for animated feature.

Wish

• Milestones: Grossed $200 million worldwide; Ranks as the sixth highest worldwide gross for an animated film in 2023.
• Wish, directed by Chris Buck, performed strongly internationally, grossing $19 million from 51 territories despite a modest domestic weekend of $760,000. The film’s worldwide box office now stands at $209.5 million, making it the sixth highest-grossing animated feature in 2023.

Trolls Band Together

• Milestones: Grossed $200 million worldwide; Ranks as the seventh highest worldwide gross for an animated film in 2023.
• Walt Dohrn’s Trolls Band Together added $1.2 million domestically, reaching a total of $100 million after 8 weeks. With an identical international total, the film’s worldwide cumulative is now $201 million, making it the seventh highest-grossing animated release in 2023.

While these achievements are noteworthy, they fall short of pre-pandemic box office trends. It’s evident that original IPs face challenges compared to franchise counterparts, raising questions about studios’ contentment with breaking even versus producing sequels for established money-making franchises like Disney and Illumination.
