After entrusting Sony Pictures with the distribution of its Blu-ray Discs and DVDs, Disney has revealed plans to close its online Disney Movie Club store. A statement on the Disney Movie Club website cites evolving consumer behavior and viewing preferences as reasons for the closure after 23 years of service.
Founded in 2001, the Disney Movie Club initially focused on selling VHS and DVD content directly to consumers. Over time, it expanded to offer Blu-ray Discs, 4K Ultra HD discs, and collectible items like lithographs and character pins. Exclusive releases were a key membership benefit, though some lacked the extras of previous DVD releases and were offered at higher prices on secondary markets.
In recent years, Disney’s emphasis has shifted towards streaming services like Disney+ and Hulu, diminishing the priority of physical media. Despite this, collectors have highlighted a backlog of catalog titles, particularly those acquired from Fox, that await proper Blu-ray or 4K disc releases.
Disney Movie Club advertisements were commonplace in Disney DVDs and Blu-rays, often enticing new members with penny-priced catalog titles. Members were required to purchase a set number of titles at full price within a specified period, with discounts available for bulk purchases. The service also featured a monthly selection automatically sent to members unless declined.
Orders will be accepted until May 20, 2024, with any unprocessed orders canceled by May 22. Membership accounts will be closed on July 20. Additionally, all members have been deemed VIPs for content access and pricing purposes.
The website now features a countdown clock for ordering and offers a free gift with purchases over $30. The farewell message on the site acknowledges the service’s history of serving over 10 million club members.
