The Locacaca fruit is a fascinating and important object in the world of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. In Part 8 of the series, Jojolion, it plays a central role in the plot, and it is increasingly looking like it will be relevant to Part 9 as well.
So what is the Locacaca fruit, exactly? In Jojolion, it is a rare and unusual fruit with incredible powers. It is first mentioned in chapter 32, where it is in the possession of the villainous Rock Human, Yagiyama. After Yagiyama is defeated, the fruit falls into the ocean, inspiring Josuke to investigate its properties and uncover its secrets. The fruit itself is an odd-looking thing, covered in pointed bumps and resembling a large Lychee fruit.
Through further research, Josuke and his companions discover that the Locacaca fruit is native to Papua New Guinea and is considered to be both rare and miraculous. They learn that the fruit works on a principle of “Equivalent Exchange,” meaning that it gives something while taking something of equal value away. However, the specifics of how this value is determined remain a mystery. When someone eats the fruit, they may gain something miraculous, such as regrowing a missing limb. But this gift comes with a cost, and it is often something just as terrible, such as having one’s eyes turn to stone.
Eventually, Josuke and his companions track down the Locacaca fruit to a tree growing on the Higashikata family’s property. This tree bears a new type of Locacaca fruit, which allows two different people to be involved in the Equivalent Exchange process – one who gains and one who loses. This new fruit is instrumental in the story of Jojolion, as it is closely tied to Josuke’s fate and the fate of his family.
The Locacaca fruit is also a closely guarded secret in the world of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. Jobin Higashikata, a member of Josuke’s family, smuggles and sells the fruit around the world using his family’s fruit company as a cover. However, over the course of Jojolion, all the known Locacaca trees and fruits are destroyed. Characters in the story speculate that the fruit may still exist somewhere on tropical islands far to the south of Japan. This speculation leads many fans to believe that Part 9 of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, titled JOJOLands, will involve rediscovering the Locacaca fruit.
JOJOLands is set on a subtropical island and has featured the ocean and sailboats prominently in promotional material, leading fans to speculate that it will involve a quest to find the elusive fruit. The story of Jojolion leaves several plot threads unresolved, including Holly Joestar-Kira’s illness. Holly is said to be the daughter of the Joseph Joestar from Part 8, and Part 9’s protagonist is similarly descended from Joseph. Many fans believe that Part 9 will be dedicated to resolving these plot threads and that the Locacaca fruit will play a crucial role in doing so.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, it seems that the Locacaca fruit will continue to be a crucial element of the world of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. Its powers, secrets, and origins make it a fascinating object, and fans are eager to see how it will be incorporated into future parts of the story.
