Harry Potter Actress Turned Down Ideal MCU Role Despite $600k Offer

Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch and Agatha Harkness

A former Harry Potter alumna, Miriam Margolyes, renowned for her candid and often controversial remarks, recently made headlines once again by revealing her decision to decline a significant offer to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The opportunity arose for Margolyes to be a part of Agatha, a highly anticipated spin-off from the immensely popular WandaVision series.

Margolyes’ comments on the matter resurfaced in September 2023, when an interview with an Australian news outlet went viral. In the interview, conducted while promoting her autobiography “Oh Miriam!”, Margolyes shed light on her near collaboration with Marvel Studios. She candidly shared her reasons for turning down the lucrative role, citing concerns about reprising her witch portrayal, reminiscent of her character Professor Pomona Sprout in the Harry Potter films. Additionally, Margolyes expressed her aversion to spending an extended period in the United States, particularly in Georgia, where the filming was scheduled to take place for four months.

Despite Marvel’s generous offer, negotiations hit a snag when Margolyes requested a substantial sum of one million pounds ($1.2 million) for her involvement. However, Marvel was willing to offer only half of her demand. Consequently, Margolyes opted to decline the opportunity, citing her own perceived greed as the primary reason for the deal falling through.

Speculations abound regarding the role Margolyes might have been considered for in Agatha. Many suggest she could have portrayed the character Lilia Calderu, eventually played by Patti LuPone. Margolyes’ theatrical background and comedic prowess make her a fitting candidate for such a role, as evidenced by her previous performances in various American films, including notable productions like Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet and Martin Scorsese’s Age Of Innocence, for which she won a BAFTA as Best Supporting Actress.

Furthermore, Margolyes’ familiarity with witchcraft-themed roles, both on-screen as Professor Sprout and on stage in productions like Wicked, adds another layer of intrigue to her potential involvement in Agatha. Her ability to seamlessly blend humor with darker storylines would have undoubtedly added a unique dynamic to the MCU.

However, beyond her acting abilities, Margolyes’ unapologetic nature and propensity for speaking her mind may have contributed to the breakdown in negotiations. Her recent comments criticizing adult Harry Potter fans and urging them to “grow up” may have raised concerns for Marvel about potential conflicts with their marketing strategy and brand image.

As the release of Agatha approaches, Margolyes’ decision to decline the role and her subsequent remarks may pose a challenge for the project’s publicity. Nevertheless, her candidness and unwavering principles serve as a reminder of the complexities involved in navigating the world of Hollywood and the intricacies of artistic integrity versus financial gain.
