In 2024, a ‘Lord of the Rings’ film could do justice to a beloved character from the original trilogy after 22 years

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King overlooked the narrative of a particular character from its original trilogy, but after 22 years, The War of the Rohirrim offers a chance to rectify this.

Set nearly two centuries prior to Frodo’s epic journey, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim promises to shine a much-needed spotlight on a character who has long been underappreciated. While mortal characters may be scarce during this period, there will be some familiar figures making appearances. Notably, this prequel will not only reintroduce one character but also reshape perceptions of their significance in the overarching story.

Warner Bros and New Line Cinema collaborate again to deliver a new animated installment in the Lord of the Rings saga, titled The War of the Rohirrim. This film delves into the tale of Helm Hammerhand, a king of Rohan whose story was briefly mentioned in Tolkien’s appendices. To narrate this epic, audiences will hear from Éowyn, reprised by Miranda Otto, ensuring her character receives the attention she deserves.

Éowyn’s role in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy often went unrecognized despite her pivotal actions, notably her pivotal moment in the Battle of Pelennor Fields. In Peter Jackson’s rendition, she was relegated to a romantic subplot, denying her character the depth she deserved. Moreover, the films omitted her eventual happiness with Faramir. Even her heroic act of vanquishing the Witch-King is sometimes downplayed, further underscoring the dismissive treatment of female characters in the series. Although Éowyn may not engage in grand battles in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, the film can redress this imbalance.

Éowyn’s return in the 2024 film not only ties the narrative to Jackson’s trilogy but also enriches her character. Her desire for recognition and her lineage to Helm Hammerhand intertwine, adding layers to her personality. Moreover, The War of the Rohirrim has the potential to provide context to Éowyn’s post-Return of the King life, offering insight into her marriage to Faramir and their family life.

By giving Éowyn a significant role in narrating Helm Hammerhand’s tale, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim elevates her character’s importance and grants her the recognition she deserves. Just as Galadriel’s narration is iconic in The Fellowship of the Ring, Éowyn’s role in the upcoming film is poised to become equally memorable. Furthermore, the animated movie will reshape perceptions of Rohan’s history, illuminating the events that shaped its people and ultimately leading to Éowyn becoming the hero of her own story.
