Kakegurui: Is Season 3 on the Horizon?

The anime series Kakegurui has established a franchise known for its thrilling and high-stakes storytelling. However, the biggest question remains: will there ever be a Season 3? This successful franchise delves into the psychology of gambling and gaming, starting with the unexpected popularity of the manga. The well-known studio MAPPA adapted it into a two-season anime that aired from 2017 to 2019, alongside a television series and a film sequel. Yet, while the franchise continues to expand, the fate of the anime remains uncertain.

It has been a few years since the second season aired, leaving fans wondering about the possibility of another season. While the wait may seem long, there could be reasons behind the delay. Let’s take a closer look at the potential for a new season of Kakegurui.

The plot revolves around Yumeko Jabami, a transfer student at Hyakkaou Private Academy, where success is determined not by academic achievements but by gambling prowess. Yumeko, addicted to gambling and exceptionally skilled at it, disrupts the status quo of the school’s hierarchy, catching the attention of the student council president.

Originally a manga created by Homura Kawamoto and Toru Naomura, published in Gangan Joker in 2014, Kakegurui has since released 14 volumes. It has gained popularity through its spin-off manga, video game adaptations, TV drama series, and a movie. However, the anime adaptation remains the franchise’s flagship.

As of now, neither the mangaka nor the production studio has confirmed a third season of the anime. However, with ongoing manga material yet to be adapted, there is certainly enough content for another season. The lack of official announcements may be attributed to industry delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, as studios have been cautious about revealing upcoming productions.

The previous seasons followed a pattern, with the first season releasing in 2017 (arriving on Netflix the following year) and the second season in 2019. Ideally, a tentative third season should have premiered this year. However, given MAPPA’s current commitments to other projects like Chainsaw Man, which take priority, the delay is understandable. Fans will have to keep their hopes high and stay patient while waiting for news about a potential Season 3, as uncertainties prevail in the world of anime production.
