In an announcement made in the May issue of Square Enix’s Gangan Joker magazine, it was revealed that the Kakegurui Twin manga spinoff by Kei Saiki will be coming to a close in the magazine’s next issue on May 22nd. Yen Press has secured the license for the spinoff manga, which offers a captivating prequel story to the immensely popular Kakegurui series. The spinoff delves into the early days of Mary Saotome, providing insight into her journey within the gambling-addicted Hyakkou Private Academy. As readers follow her path, they witness her transformation from an ordinary girl to a formidable force driven by wit and luck.

Kakegurui Twin initially debuted in Gangan Joker back in September 2015, capturing the attention of fans with its unique storyline. Square Enix published the manga’s 13th compiled book volume in September 2022, while Yen Press released the 12th volume in December 2022. The spinoff’s success extended beyond the pages of the manga, inspiring the creation of a live-action series that premiered on Amazon Prime in Japan in March 2021. The thrilling narrative of Kakegurui Twin also caught the eye of anime enthusiasts, resulting in the production of a Netflix anime series that premiered in August 2022.

The original Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler manga, penned by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Tōru Naomura, made its debut in Gangan Joker in March 2014. The series, known for its gripping storyline and intense gambling battles, garnered widespread popularity. Square Enix published the 16th volume of the main manga in September 2022, further solidifying its position as a fan-favorite. Yen Press acquired the license for the digital release of the series, enabling a wider audience to enjoy its thrilling content.

The success of the Kakegurui franchise led to various adaptations, including a television anime series that aired in Japan from July to September 2017. Following its domestic run, the anime found a global audience through its release on Netflix in February 2018. The second season of the anime premiered in January 2019, with Netflix streaming it in June of the same year. Sentai Filmworks secured the license for both seasons and released them on home video, complete with an English dub.

Expanding beyond the realm of animation, Kakegurui also made its mark in the live-action realm. A 10-episode live-action series premiered in Japan in January 2018, with Netflix streaming it internationally. The second season of the live-action series arrived in March 2019, further captivating fans with its thrilling portrayal of the intense gambling battles. Building on the success of the live-action adaptations, the franchise expanded to the big screen with the release of the first Kakegurui live-action film in May 2019. A highly anticipated sequel film finally hit theaters in June 2021, overcoming multiple delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
