Bandai Namco has made a huge announcement that the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi series is making a comeback, over 15 years since the release of the last mainline entry in the franchise. The news was unveiled during the Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour 2023 event, and a teaser trailer was released to confirm that the new game is currently in development.
The trailer didn’t reveal much in the way of details, such as the confirmed platforms, release window, or the game’s official title. Instead, the teaser trailer simply said, “A New Sparking Begins,” leaving fans of the franchise eagerly anticipating more news.
It’s worth noting that in Japan, the Budokai franchise is known as Dragon Ball Z: Sparking! – hence the name “A New Sparking Begins” in the trailer. An English version of the trailer was shown during a livestream, although it hasn’t been officially uploaded yet, and it uses the phrase “A New Budokai Tenkaichi Begins.”
The original Budokai Tenkaichi game was released on PlayStation 2 back in 2005, followed by two sequels over the next two years, which were released on both PS2 and Wii. Although there were several spinoffs that followed the trilogy, the series hasn’t seen a new mainline entry since 2007’s Budokai Tenkaichi 3.
For fans of the franchise, the Budokai Tenkaichi games are famous for being 3D fighting games that include dozens of characters from the Dragon Ball Z anime. While the teaser trailer doesn’t indicate whether the new game will be Budokai Tenkaichi 4 proper or just another spinoff entry, it’s safe to say that fans of the series are eagerly anticipating any news they can get about this long-awaited game.
