SAO’s best storyline is a parody, not official

The Abridged series by Something Witty Entertainment provides a more satisfying interpretation of the controversial storyline in Sword Art Online.

Surprisingly, the best version of Sword Art Online’s divisive story comes from a parody series created by Something Witty Entertainment. Sword Art Online is an anime based on Reki Kawahara’s light novels, which has been popular for the past ten years. The series initially gained attention with its first season, where virtual reality gamers were trapped inside an MMORPG called Sword Art Online. Unable to log out, their lives were at stake in both the game and reality. This unique arc concluded after twelve episodes, but the anime itself continued with various storylines that followed the characters outside the game, spanning multiple seasons, video games, and even movies. Despite its longevity, the series has faced criticism for its writing, especially after the first season’s escape from the deadly game. Characters like Kirito and Asuna, who were initially beloved, were now subject to scrutiny as fans began to notice flaws present since the beginning. As a result, Sword Art Online’s writing and characters have gained infamy among anime fans. However, the Abridged series managed to take the show’s weaknesses and turn them into strengths.

Something Witty Entertainment, a YouTube entertainer, started sharing Sword Art Online Abridged in 2013. This parody series took episodes from the original anime and added clever jokes and new renditions of the iconic characters. Interestingly, this version of the anime offers a better storyline than the source material. The most significant departure from the original show is the portrayal of Kirito, who is depicted as a narcissistic sociopath in the Abridged series. While the original Kirito kept to himself, this version proudly showcases his ego and relentlessly mocks other players in the game. Furthermore, the Abridged parody improves the relationship between Asuna and Kirito, which was lackluster in the original. The original romance between them lacked chemistry, with only a moderately touching moment near the end of the first arc when Asuna sacrifices herself. In contrast, the Abridged series takes their relationship in a different direction by emphasizing their mutual dislike. They constantly exchange insults, each trying to outdo the other. Asuna is frustrated with Kirito’s self-centeredness, while Kirito is annoyed by Asuna’s empathy for others, as he prefers being a lone wolf. These interactions between the two characters are both hysterical and revealing of their personalities.

Currently, Something Witty Entertainment has released 16 episodes of Sword Art Online Abridged, with more to come. They have also started creating Abridged parodies of My Hero Academia for fans of the popular superhero series. Sword Art Online has divided anime fans, but the fact that both lovers and haters of the original series agree that the parody is even better speaks volumes about its quality.
