Disney’s latest animated venture, “Wish,” seems to be encountering a challenging start as early reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes reveal a lackluster score of 58%. Scheduled for a wide release on November 22, the film is grappling with the potential label of being “rotten” on the popular review aggregation site, marking Disney’s lowest score for an animated feature since the 2005 release of “Chicken Little,” which received a score of 37%. While “Wish” is still ahead of “Chicken Little,” the film is on the cusp of falling into the unfavorable category, and positive reviews could potentially salvage its standing.
Critics have not held back in expressing their disappointment with “Wish.” Descriptions of the film include terms such as amusing but underwhelming, lacking in laughs, charm, and emotional depth. Avi Offer of NYC Movie Guru went so far as to describe it as an inferior B-movie when compared to the acclaimed “Frozen.” Carla Hay of Culture Mix found “Wish” to be forgettable and generic, criticizing its plot, characters, and songs.
Negative reviews do acknowledge the film’s potential but argue that it falls short of expectations. A recurring concern is the excessive number of Disney references, with critics noting that they become distracting and overshadow the film’s own narrative. David Reddish of Wealth of Geeks remarked that “Wish” becomes overly preoccupied with references, neglecting to tell a unique story of its own.
On a positive note, some critics found merit in “Wish.” They appreciated the film’s abundant Disney references, considering them a quality for longtime fans. Luke Y. Thompson of SuperHeroHype commended the film for its references, while Doug Jamieson of The Jam Report praised “Wish” as a “wondrous throwback to classic animated musicals.” Julia Glassman of The Mary Sue even found the film surprisingly emotional.
Directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, “Wish” follows the story of Asha, voiced by Ariana DeBose, who makes a powerful wish answered by a cosmic force named Star. Together, they embark on a journey to save her kingdom from the tyrannical King Magnifico, portrayed by Chris Pine. The film features a cast that includes Alan Tudyk, Angelique Cabral, Victor Garber, and Natasha Rothwell.
Despite the mixed reviews, “Wish” is still slated to premiere in theaters on November 22, 2023. The film’s performance at the box office and audience reception will ultimately determine its fate in the realm of Disney animated features.
