Dragon Ball fans may want Android 16 back, but it’s a bad idea.

Android 16’s absence from the Dragon Ball franchise may disappoint fans, but his return would serve little purpose beyond Dragon Ball Z. Despite his status as a fan-favorite character, his death played a significant role in the narrative, serving as a catalyst for Gohan’s transformation into a Super Saiyan 2 and the defeat of the villainous Cell. His role in the story has been fulfilled, and his return would not add much value to the plot.

Furthermore, the rules surrounding the eternal dragons in the Dragon Ball universe make it difficult to bring back characters like Android 16. Shenron, the dragon most commonly summoned in the series, is unable to restore inorganic beings such as Android 16, who was completely mechanical and not a human beforehand. This is a crucial factor in understanding why he has not been revived at any point in the series.

While there are loopholes with the rules surrounding the eternal dragons, such as Porunga’s lack of similar weaknesses, the idea of bringing back Android 16 would likely be futile. If he were to be revived, he would have to carve out an entirely new life for himself, and deal with the concept of not being truly alive. This would be a difficult narrative to pursue, given that the show’s focus has consistently been on characters such as Goku and Vegeta, with supporting characters such as Krillin, Yamcha, and Tien being reduced to mere footnotes in Dragon Ball Super.

In addition, the character’s legacy lives on through his relationship with Androids 17 and 18, who have evolved considerably since their initial appearances in Dragon Ball Z. While Android 18 has since married Krillin and started a family, 17 has taken on the nature-loving attributes of 16. If Android 16 were to return, his role in the story would be difficult to justify given the evolution of these characters and the focus on other characters in the show.

Ultimately, Android 16’s legacy as a hero who defended nature and made friends is secure, and it is for the best that he remains a beloved character who has completed his arc. Bringing him back would be a disservice to his character and the narrative as a whole.
