Vegeta failed to reach the Super Saiyan 4 form

In Dragon Ball GT, Vegeta’s transformation into Super Saiyan 4 is an iconic moment just like Goku’s, but it is clear that he did not earn it through his own hard work and determination. This transformation is arguably the strongest in Dragon Ball history, and Vegeta, who is obsessed with attaining increasingly powerful transformations through intense training and solitary concentration, was not able to reach it on his own. Instead, it was Bulma, his wife, who unlocked this top-tier Super Saiyan form for him.

Vegeta’s power-level progression throughout Dragon Ball is marked by his hard work, sweat, and tears. It all began with his training to become a Super Saiyan after witnessing two other Saiyans achieve the transformation before he could, namely Goku and Future Trunks. After a long stretch of time training on a hostile world, battling deadly asteroids reigning hell upon him, Vegeta finally found the strength he needed to unlock Super Saiyan. After increasing his power enough to eventually reach Super Saiyan 2, Vegeta’s next major power-up would be marked by his ascension to Super Saiyan God within the continuity of Dragon Ball Super.

While Goku unlocked this transformation first, he needed the help of an energy-sharing ritual, whereas Vegeta got there all on his own. Unfortunately, all the hard work that Vegeta put into earning his previous transformations was not seen with Super Saiyan 4. In fact, Vegeta did not really do anything at all to unlock it.

In Dragon Ball GT episode 55, Goku and Pan are battling the strongest Shadow Dragon yet, while Vegeta sits at home, thinking about how Goku has immensely widened the gap between their power levels by reaching Super Saiyan 4. However, after looking back on his life and recognizing how hard he has worked to be as strong as he is today, Vegeta decided that he was not bothered by the fact that Goku is better than him anymore. He was happy with simply seeing how strong he could become without comparing himself to Goku.

But, that changed completely by the end of the episode when Bulma said she could make him a Super Saiyan 4, no training required, and she already proved she could pull it off. In the Baby Saga of Dragon Ball GT, Bulma was mind-controlled into helping the fusion of Baby and Vegeta (who was known as Baby-Vegeta) become a Golden Great Ape to beat Super Saiyan 4 Goku. Becoming a Golden Great Ape and then controlling one’s mind in that form is how a Saiyan becomes a Super Saiyan 4. Baby-Vegeta did not become a Super Saiyan 4 because the presence of Baby within Vegeta would not allow for the transformation. However, the machine Bulma built to harness and heighten Bruits Waves could be used again on Vegeta alone. This time, that Golden Great Ape transformation would result in a Super Saiyan 4 since Vegeta would not have an alien parasite blocking it, and he had already proved in Dragon Ball Z that he could control his Great Ape form with ease.

What’s most interesting about Vegeta’s transformation into a Super Saiyan 4 is that he did not have to increase his power level at all to get there. Every other time Vegeta needed to unlock a new form in Dragon Ball, he had to push himself harder than he ever had before. However, in this case, that power was within him all along, and it just needed to be brought out with Bulma’s device. Therefore, it is true that Vegeta never really unlocked Super Saiyan 4. Instead, it was Bulma who did all the work in unlocking it for him.
