In the world of manga and anime, Hunter x Hunter has earned a reputation for its complexity, confusing abilities, and various political factions. However, a new series called Cipher Academy by Nisioisin and Yuji Iwasaki has recently surpassed Hunter x Hunter in terms of complexity. Cipher Academy centers around Iroha Irohazaka, who attempts to survive in a cutthroat code-breaking school.
The manga features a complex Nen power system, which is a type of energy that allows characters to perform extraordinary abilities. On top of that, the series has several political factions that add to the complexity of the plot. Despite being hard to decipher at times, the latest chapter of Cipher Academy has raised the complexity to a whole new level.
Chapter 15, which was translated by Dan Luffey, continues the Murder Mystery game that began in the previous chapter and proves that this arc is the most confusing one so far. In this game, everyone is assigned the role of one of their classmates, complete with their special abilities and backgrounds. They must then solve a series of Cipher Academy’s trademark puzzles as their character to try and discover the murderer, who must prevent them from figuring out their identity.
This premise is already incredibly complicated, but what makes it worse is that each character already has their own unique code-solving abilities on top of what the game gives them, adding another dimension to the game. To make things even more challenging, instead of presenting their conversations in a way that makes them easy to parse, the mangakas present their discussion in an overwhelming barrage of information, leaving the reader to figure out which characters are talking to each other and what relevant information is being revealed.
Of course, complexity is nothing new to Cipher Academy. The series has featured almost impossibly difficult-to-decipher puzzles and wordplay that is effectively impossible to translate, even for Viz’s professionals. The author Nisioisin is well known for creating other series that heavily rely on this form of wordplay, such as the Monogatari series and Medaka Box, so this level of convolution should be expected. The series has even overloaded its readers with information before during Iroha and Yugata’s lipogram battle.
However, even that was more straightforward than the series’ latest chapter, which even caused Iroha to have to lie down alone to actually process what he had heard. While Cipher Academy has fewer characters than Hunter x Hunter, in this murder mystery arc, each one essentially counts as two characters simultaneously, and everything they say could be coming from them, the character they are playing, or their idea of what their character would be. This actually makes the series much harder to follow despite their abilities being more straightforward than most of Hunter x Hunter’s Nen abilities.
Cipher Academy’s complexity can replace Hunter x Hunter while it is on hiatus. With Hunter x Hunter currently on an indefinite hiatus, Cipher Academy can hopefully fill the void for fans looking for a manga with similar complexity. Unfortunately, many fans may be deterred by how complicated it is, which is worrying for the new Shonen Jump series’ future. However, fans willing to wade through the confusing dialogue and rules will find that Cipher Academy’s tangled web is making it one of Shonen Jump’s most entertaining series in addition to outdoing Hunter x Hunter.
