Avatar: The Last Airbender movie excites the show creator

Avatar: The Last Airbender, the beloved animated series that aired from 2005 to 2008, has been making waves again in recent years. The show’s addition to Netflix in 2020 brought in a new generation of fans, and the announcement of a new live-action series and movie has had longtime fans buzzing with excitement. Bryan Konietzko, the co-creator of the series, has been heavily involved in the expansion of the Avatar world through Avatar Studios, a production company he started with co-creator Michael DiMartino.

Konietzko has expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, which will be the studio’s first animated project since The Legend of Korra. He explained that while working on the two previous Avatar series, he and DiMartino had many ideas they didn’t have the opportunity to explore. With the expansion of the Avatar universe through Avatar Studios, they now have the chance to bring these ideas to life in new and exciting ways.

The Avatar Studios team has already announced several new Avatar projects, including a live-action Netflix series that is set to premiere in 2023, a new show about an Earth nation Avatar, and the feature film centered on the adult Team Avatar. Konietzko has said that he and DiMartino are dedicated to making sure that all of these projects come to a satisfying conclusion, staying true to the spirit of Team Avatar throughout.

While animated feature films can be challenging to produce, Konietzko believes that the effort will be worth it. He explained that feature films offer the opportunity to create something truly special, with more time and resources to craft a story and characters that will resonate with audiences. He emphasized that as an artist, he finds the prospect of working on a feature film alluring, as it allows for more time to refine and perfect the artwork and animation.

In addition to the challenge of creating an animated feature film, Konietzko and the Avatar Studios team are also excited to explore new animation technology. Konietzko has cited Hayao Miyazaki, the founder of Studio Ghibli, as an inspiration. Studio Ghibli is known for its breathtakingly beautiful animation, and Avatar Studios has adopted one of its policies, which states that everything at the studio, even if it is later rendered in 3D, “has to start as a handmade piece of art.”

Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender will have to wait until October 2025 for the release of the untitled Avatar movie, but with the dedication and passion of Konietzko and the Avatar Studios team, it’s sure to be worth the wait.
